Pictures cannot be recorded or recording takes too much time

Is a memory card inserted?

Pictures cannot be recorded if no memory card is inserted. Open the memory card slot cover or battery chamber cover, insert a memory card, and try again.

  • When [Enable release] is selected for [Slot empty release lock] in the setup menu, the shutter can be released with no memory card inserted. No pictures will be recorded; during playback, the camera displays [Demo].
Is the write-protect switch on the SD memory card set to the “lock” position?
If the write-protect switch on the SD card is set to the “lock” position, shooting (recording) is unavailable and a warning will appear in the shooting display. Remove the card from the camera, unlock the write-protect switch, and try again.
Has the memory card been formatted?
Format the memory card before use if using a new memory card or a memory card that has been formatted in another camera or computer. Format the card using [Format memory card] in the setup menu after making backup copies and saving them to a computer or other device.
Is there sufficient free space on the memory card?
No further pictures can be recorded when the memory card is full. Format the card using [Format memory card] in the setup menu after making backup copies and saving them to a computer or other device.
Are pictures currently being recorded to the memory card?
The memory card access lamp lights while pictures are being recorded and the shutter release may be disabled. Do not remove the memory card or battery; wait until the memory card access lamp turns off before taking the next shot.
Are you using a compatible memory card?
If you use an SD memory card with a camera that supports SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory cards, recording may take time due to its slower transfer rate. Use an SDHC or SDXC memory card when shooting high-resolution still images or videos.
Is long exposure noise reduction set to [OFF]?
The time required to record photos doubles if [ON] is selected for [Long exposure NR] in the photo shooting menu. Select [OFF] to reduce the time required for recording.
