Error messages

Check the following if an error message is displayed.

Battery temperature is elevated. The camera will turn off.
The camera will turn off to prevent overheating.
Memory card is write protected.
This card cannot be used.
This card cannot be read.
Card is not formatted. Format card?
Out of memory.
Image cannot be saved.
Image cannot be modified.
Cannot record movie.
Cannot reset file numbering.
Set the focus-mode selector to MF.
Memory contains no images.
File contains no image data.
All images are hidden.
This image cannot be deleted.
Raise the flash.
Turn the camera off and then on again.
Speedlight setting error
System error
Clean HDMI output enabled. Select "Movie manual" mode.

Battery temperature is elevated. The camera will turn off.
The camera will turn off to prevent overheating.

The camera turns off automatically. Wait until the camera or battery temperature has cooled before resuming use.

Memory card is write protected.

The write-protect switch is locked. Unlock it.
Memory cards

This card cannot be used.
This card cannot be read.

An error occurred while accessing the memory card.

Card is not formatted. Format card?

The memory card has not been formatted for use in the camera.
Formatting deletes all data saved on the memory card. If you need to keep copies of any images, make sure to select [No] and save the copies to a computer or other medium before formatting the memory card. Select [Yes] and press the  button to format the memory card.
Memory cards

Out of memory.

Delete images or insert a new memory card.

Image cannot be saved.

Image cannot be modified.

Check that the images can be edited.
Restrictions on image editing, Cannot edit images.

Cannot record movie.

A time-out error occurred while saving the movie on the memory card. Select a memory card with a faster write speed.

Cannot reset file numbering.

File numbering cannot be reset because the sequential number of a folder has reached the upper limit.
Change the memory card, or use [Format card] to format the memory card.

Set the focus-mode selector to MF.

When [Clean HDMI output] is set to [On] and the camera is connected to an HDMI-compatible device, set the focus-mode selector to .
The camera body

Memory contains no images.

Insert a memory card that contains images.

File contains no image data.

The file was not created or edited with this camera. The file cannot be viewed on this camera.
View the file using a computer or the device used to create or edit this file.

All images are hidden.

This image cannot be deleted.

The image is protected.
Disable protection.
Protect

Raise the flash.

When shooting in [Night portrait] or [Backlighting] (with [HDR] set to [Off]) scene mode, raise the built-in flash before shooting.

Turn the camera off and then on again.

An error occurred in lens operation.
Do not apply excessive force on the lens.
If you turn the camera off and then on again, lens operation will return to normal.
The camera is on but does not respond.
If the error persists even after turning the camera off and then on again, contact your retailer or Nikon-authorized service representative.

Speedlight setting error

A Speedlight function that cannot be used with the camera is set. Change the Speedlight setting.

System error

An error occurred in the camera’s internal circuitry. Turn the camera off, remove and reinsert the battery, and turn the camera on.
The camera is on but does not respond.
If the error persists, contact your retailer or Nikon-authorized service representative.

Clean HDMI output enabled. Select "Movie manual" mode.

When [Clean HDMI output] is set to [On] and the camera is connected to an HDMI-compatible device, rotate the mode dial to Movie manual.
