New AF-Area Modes: “Wide-Area AF (C1)” and “Wide-Area AF (C2)”

[Wide-area AF (C1)] and [Wide-area AF (C2)] options have been added to the AF-area modes available with autofocus (AF-Area Mode). Use these options to define custom AF-area sizes, with heights and widths measured in focus points.

Choosing Custom AF-Area Sizes

After selecting [Wide-area AF (C1)] or [Wide-area AF (C2)] for [AF-area mode] in the photo shooting menu, you can choose the dimensions of the focus areas used for the selected AF-area during still photography. Use 1 and 3 to choose the height and 4 and 2 to choose the width.

After selecting [Wide-area AF (C1)] or [Wide-area AF (C2)] for [AF-area mode] in the video recording menu, you can choose the dimensions of the focus areas used for the selected AF-area mode during video recording. The items in the video recording menu offer a choice of 12 options ranging from [1×1] to [13×7].

Choosing the Focus-Area Size

To choose the dimensions of the focus area when [Wide-area AF (C1)] or [Wide-area AF (C2)] is selected for [AF-area mode], hold the focus-mode button and press 1, 3, 4, or 2. The illustration shows the display for an AF area with a size of [13×3].

“Wide-Area AF (C1)”/“Wide-Area AF (C2)”

  • These options are recommended where the area used for focus can to a certain extent be determined in advance.

  • Subject detection is available via the [AF subject detection options] items in the photo shooting and video recording menus. These can be used to choose the type of subject to which the camera gives priority when focusing.

  • [Wide-area AF (C1)] and [Wide-area AF (C2)] have been added to the options available for Custom Settings a8 and g4 [Limit AF-area mode selection].

  • [Wide-area AF (C1)] and [Wide-area AF (C2)] have also been added to the [AF-area mode], [AF-area mode + AF-ON], [Recall shooting functions], and [Recall shooting functions (hold)] options available for Custom Setting f2 [Custom controls (shooting)].
