Charging the battery
Fully charge the supplied EN-EL25a/EN-EL25 battery before use.
Battery care
- Read and follow the warnings and cautions in “For your safety” (For your safety) and “Caring for the camera and battery: Cautions” (Caring for the camera and battery: Cautions).
- To use the EN-EL25a, the camera's firmware version must be C: 1.10 or later (Firmware version).
- Connecting the camera to a computer to charge the battery
- Charging the camera battery with the AC adapter (available separately)
Connecting the camera to a computer to charge the battery
With the battery inserted in the camera, connect the camera with a computer using the supplied USB cable to charge.
- Insert the EN-EL25a or EN-EL25 into the camera (Inserting the battery and a memory card).
- After confirming that the camera is off, connect the supplied USB cable (q) to the camera, and then connect it to a computer.
Do not use force or attempt to insert the connectors at an angle.- Turn on the computer before charging.
- The camera charge lamp (w) lights amber while charging is in progress. The lamp turns off when charging is complete.
- A battery will fully charge in about 9 hours (when using the EN-EL25a) or 7 hours and 40 minutes (when using the EN-EL25) (when charging an exhausted battery at an input of 5 V/500 mA). Depending on the standard and type of USB connector on the computer, the charging time may be shorter.
- When charging is complete, disconnect the USB cable. Be sure to keep the connectors straight when disconnecting them.
- Computers will also supply current to power the battery when connected via the optional UC-E25 USB cable (featuring Type C connectors at both ends).
Notes when charging by connecting to a computer
- If the battery cannot be charged using the supplied USB cable to connect the camera and computer, for example because the battery is not compatible or the temperature of the camera is elevated, the charge lamp will flash rapidly for about 30 seconds and then turn off. If the charge lamp is off and you did not observe the battery charging, turn the camera on and check the battery level.
- When charging, do not use the connectors of a USB hub or keyboard. Connect the camera and computer directly.
- If the computer goes into hibernation (sleep mode) while charging, the camera stops charging. To continue charging, wake up the computer from hibernation (sleep mode).
- Depending on the model and product specifications, some computers will not supply current to charge the camera.
Connecting to a computer to power the camera
- To supply power from a computer, select [Enable] for [USB power delivery] in the setup menu, connect the camera to a computer using the supplied USB cable or the optional UC-E25 USB cable (featuring Type C connectors at both ends), and then turn the camera on. For more information, see ““Power delivery” versus “charging”” (“Power delivery” versus “charging”).
- Power will only be supplied to the camera when the battery is inserted.
- The battery will not charge while the camera is powered by an outside source.
- If you use the supplied USB cable to supply power from a computer, the camera battery will be consumed even while power is being supplied. If you use the separately sold UC-E25 USB cable, the camera battery will not be consumed (the camera battery may be consumed depending on your computer model and specifications).
Charging the camera battery with the AC adapter (available separately)
With the battery inserted in the camera, connect the camera to the optional EH-8P AC adapter using the separately sold UC-E25 USB cable (featuring Type C connectors at both ends) to charge the battery.
- The EH-8P AC adapter cannot be connected using the supplied USB cable.
- Insert the EN-EL25a or EN-EL25 into the camera (Inserting the battery and a memory card).
- After confirming that the camera is off, connect the camera and the optional EH-8P AC adapter (q) using the optional UC-E25 USB cable (featuring Type C connectors at both ends).
Connect the power plug of the AC adapter to a household electrical outlet. The battery charges while the camera is off. Keep the plug straight during insertion and removal.- The camera charge lamp (w) lights amber while charging is in progress. The lamp turns off when charging is complete.
- A battery will fully charge in about 2 hours (when using the EN-EL25a) or 1 hour and 40 minutes (when using the EN-EL25) (for an exhausted battery).
- When charging is complete, disconnect the USB cable. Be sure to keep the connectors straight when disconnecting them.
- The shape of the plug varies with the country or region of purchase.
When charging with the AC adapter
If the battery cannot be charged using the AC adapter, for example because the battery is not compatible or the temperature of the camera is elevated, the charge lamp will flash rapidly for about 30 seconds and then turn off. If the charge lamp is off and you did not observe the battery charging, turn the camera on and check the battery level.
Charging the camera with the EH-7P charging AC adapter (available separately)
The camera can also be charged with the optional EH-7P charging AC adapter. With the camera turned off, connect the EH-7P charging AC adapter to the camera’s USB connector and then connect the power plug to a household electrical outlet. The battery charges while the camera is off. Keep the plug straight during insertion and removal.
Powering the camera with the AC adapter
- If [Enable] is selected for [USB power delivery] in the setup menu, connecting the EH-8P or EH-7P will power the camera when the camera is turned on. For more information, see ““Power delivery” versus “charging”” (“Power delivery” versus “charging”).
- Power will only be supplied to the camera when the battery is inserted.
- The battery will not charge while the camera is powered by an outside source.
Charging with portable chargers (power banks)
Portable chargers can be used to power the camera or charge the camera battery. For information on the portable chargers that have been tested and approved for use, as well as the approximate number of shots that can be taken and the approximate number of times the camera battery can be charged using each device, see “Portable chargers (power banks)” (Portable chargers (power banks)).
Charging with third-party USB Type-C and PD (power delivery) compatible AC adapters
- The camera battery can also be charged with third-party AC adapters. Use an AC adapter equipped with a USB Type-C connector that supports USB PD (power delivery).
- Use an AC adapter that supports output of 15 W (5 V/3 A) or more.
- Use a USB cable that is Type-C on both ends to connect to the camera.
- We do not guarantee that all third-party AC adapters and USB cables are able to charge the camera battery.
Charging with the MH-32 battery charger (available separately)
The supplied EN-EL25a/EN-EL25 rechargeable Li-ion battery can also be charged with the optional MH-32 battery charger.
