Inserting the battery and memory cards

The camera is equipped with two memory card slots: a slot that takes one CFexpress or XQD memory card (q) and another that takes one microSD memory card (w), for a total of two cards, one of each type.

  • Turn the camera off before inserting or removing the battery and memory cards.
  • Holding the memory card in the orientation shown, slide it straight into the slot until it clicks into place.
  • If you are using a microSD memory card, we recommend that you insert it before inserting the battery.
  • Using the battery to keep the orange battery latch pressed to one side, slide the battery into the battery chamber until the latch locks it in place.

Removing the battery

To remove the battery, turn the camera off and open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. Press the battery latch in the direction shown by the arrow to release the battery and then remove the battery by hand.

Removing memory cards

After confirming that the memory card access lamp is off, turn the camera off and open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. Press the memory card in to eject it (q), and pull it out to remove it (w).

  • We recommend that you remove the battery before removing microSD memory cards.

Cautions: Removing CFexpress or XQD memory cards

  • When removing a CFexpress or XQD memory card, the card may not be fully ejected and may be difficult to remove. If this happens, fully press the card in again to eject it.
  • If the CFexpress or XQD memory card is difficult to remove, clean any dirt or dust off from the card. Cleaning the card may make it easier to remove.

High-temperature warnings

If the camera becomes hot, a high-temperature warning (b) may appear in the shooting display.

  • Note that the camera body, battery, and memory card may be hot while the high-temperature warning (b) is displayed.
  • Wait for the warning to clear from the display before removing memory cards from the camera. Attempting to remove the memory cards immediately may cause burns or cause the cards to be dropped and damaged.

Battery level

  • The battery level is shown in the shooting display while the camera is on.
  • The battery level display changes as the battery level diminishes, from L through K, J, I, and H. When the battery level falls to H, suspend shooting and charge the battery or ready a spare battery.
  • If the message [Shutter release disabled. Recharge battery.] is displayed, charge or exchange the battery.

The standby timer

  • The camera is equipped with a standby timer function that automatically turns off the monitor after a set time has elapsed to help reduce the drain on the battery.
    • If no operations are performed and the set time limit expires, the standby timer will turn off the monitor.
    • The default setting for the time until the standby timer turns off the monitor is approximately 1 minute.
    • The monitor will appear dim a few seconds before the monitor turns off.
    • The power-on lamp will flash while the monitor is being turned off by the standby timer. Pressing the shutter-release/REC button halfway while the lamp is flashing will turn on the monitor and return it to its previous state.
  • If no operations are performed within approximately 1 minute after the monitor is turned off by the standby timer, the camera’s power and the power-on lamp will automatically turn off.
  • The length of time until the standby timer turns off the monitor can be selected using Custom Setting c3 [Power off delay] > [Standby timer].

Number of exposures remaining

  • When the camera is on, the shooting display shows the number of photographs that can be taken at current settings.
  • Values over 1000 are rounded down to the nearest hundred. For example, values between 8000 and 8099 are shown as 8.0 k.
  • If no memory cards are inserted, an [–E–] indicator will be displayed.
  • If two memory cards are inserted, the camera displays only the number of exposures remaining on one card. The display of exposures remaining on either memory card depends on the camera settings below.
    • When [Overflow] is selected for [Secondary slot function] in the photo shooting menu, the number of exposures remaining on the card on which the image is recorded is displayed (Secondary slot function).
    • When an option other than [Overflow] is selected for [Secondary slot function] in the photo shooting menu, the number of exposures remaining on the card with the least amount of space available is displayed (Secondary slot function).
