Points to note when filming videos
Note the following points when recording videos:
- Each video can be up to 125 minutes in length.
- Each video recorded to a card with a capacity of 32 GB or less may be saved across a maximum of 8 files. Each of these files will be a maximum of 4 GB in size. The number of files and the length of each file vary with the options selected for [Frame size/frame rate].
- If [ProRes 422 HQ 10-bit (MOV)] is selected for [Video file type] in the video recording menu and the memory card has a capacity of 32 GB or less, recording will automatically end when the file reaches 4 GB in size. Videos are not recorded across multiple files.
- Depending on memory card write speed, shooting may end before the maximum length is reached.
- Video cannot be recorded to microSD memory cards or to XQD memory cards with a capacity of 32 GB or less when [N-RAW 12-bit (NEV)], [R3D NE 12-bit (R3D)], or [ProRes RAW HQ 12-bit (MOV)] is selected for [Video file type] in the video recording menu. Also, only when using microSD memory cards, video cannot be recorded when [ProRes 422 HQ 10-bit (MOV)] is selected for [Video file type] in the video recording menu.
- A 0 icon (The 0 icon) indicates that videos cannot be recorded.
- [Spot metering] is not available during video recording.
- Flash lighting (Using an on-camera flash) cannot be used.
Caution: Connecting to video accessories
- Compatible third-party video accessories can be connected to the camera’s digital accessory shoe. If an error occurs when attaching a third-party video accessory, the following accessory error messages are displayed.
- If the available amount of power supplied to the accessory from the camera is exceeded, u will be displayed on the camera. Turn the camera power off, and reset the accessory so that it will not exceed the amount of power that can be supplied by the camera. For more information on accessory settings, see the documentation provided with the accessory.
- If the temperature of the accessory becomes elevated, a temperature warning (Z) will be displayed on the camera. Turn off the camera and accessory, and wait for the temperature to cool off.
- If a communications error occurs with the camera, a will be displayed on the camera. Turn off the camera and accessory and wipe off any water drops, dust or dirt from the terminals of the camera’s digital accessory shoe and the accessory. If a is still displayed after attaching the accessory again and turning on the power of the camera and accessory, consult a Nikon-authorized service representative.
- If an error other than an excessive power drain, temperature warning, or communications error occurs while using an accessory, b will be displayed on the camera. Turn off the camera and accessory, and remove the accessory. If b is still displayed after attaching the accessory again and turning on the power of the camera and accessory, consult a Nikon-authorized service representative.
- When connecting with both an external microphone/line input connector and the digital accessory shoe, third-party video accessories attached to the digital accessory shoe cannot be used because the camera prioritizes the connection to the external microphone/line input connector.
Adjusting white balance during video recording
White balance can be adjusted during video recording by highlighting [White balance] in the i menu and rotating a command dial.
Using a fixed shutter speed
In modes S and M, shutter speed can be set to values between 1/25 s and 1/16000 s (the slowest available shutter speed varies with the frame rate).
Using an external microphone
You can use third-party microphones with 3.5 mm mini-jack plugs to record audio by connecting them to the external microphone/line input connector.
- Use [Mic jack plug-in power] in the video recording menu to choose whether the power for the external microphone is supplied by the camera (Mic jack plug-in power).
