RAW video

Video recorded with [N-RAW 12-bit (NEV)], [R3D NE 12-bit (R3D)], or [ProRes RAW HQ 12-bit (MOV)] selected for [Video file type] in the video recording menu is referred to as RAW video.

Cautions: Recording RAW video

  • The following restrictions apply when [N-RAW 12-bit (NEV)], [R3D NE 12-bit (R3D)], or [ProRes RAW HQ 12-bit (MOV)] is selected.
    • [Active D-Lighting], [High ISO NR], [Diffraction compensation], [Breathing compensation], [Skin softening], [Electronic VR], and [Built-in microphone options] cannot be set in the video recording menu.
    • The [Video flicker reduction] > [Digital flicker reduction] option in the video recording menu is disabled.
    • RAW videos cannot be edited on the camera.
    • Regardless of the option selected for [HDMI] > [Output resolution] in the setup menu, the maximum output resolution is 1920 × 1080.
  • The following restrictions apply when [N-RAW 12-bit (NEV)] or [ProRes RAW HQ 12-bit (MOV)] is selected.
    • ISO sensitivities of Hi 0.3 through Hi 2.0 are not available.
    • For information on the cautions that apply when [N-Log] is selected for tone mode, see “Recording N-Log video” (Recording N-Log video).

Viewing and editing RAW videos

RAW videos can only be viewed and edited using computer software that supports the RAW video format.

R3D video

Selecting [R3D NE 12-bit (R3D)] for [Video file type] in the video recording menu allows you to record RAW video assuming RAW processing and editing using the same process typically employed for data shot with RED Digital Cinema, Inc. IPP2.

  • [Video file type] cannot be set to [R3D NE 12-bit (R3D)] if the shooting mode is b.
  • You can set [Base ISO sensitivity] to switch between low and high sensitivity. Auto ISO sensitivity control cannot be used.
  • The tone mode is fixed at [Log3G10]. Log3G10 is a tone mode that uses a log curve with a wide dynamic range that suppresses loss of details in highlights and shadows. This assumes color grading that is the same post-production process typically employed for data shot with RED Digital Cinema, Inc. IPP2. You can shoot with Red Digital Cinema, Inc. color science.
  • Third-party video editing software compatible with R3D video is required for RAW processing, editing, and color grading.
  • Use a Log3G10 LUT to check the color grading on the camera’s shooting display. LUTs for Log3G10 or LUTs created using video editing software can be applied to the shooting display by setting [3D LUT].

Cautions: Recording R3D video

  • In addition to the restrictions shared with RAW video, the following restrictions exist when the [R3D NE 12-bit (R3D)] setting is selected.
    • Shooting mode is fixed at M mode.
    • Exposure compensation cannot be performed.
    • [Same as photo settings], [Auto], and [Natural light auto] cannot be set for white balance.
    • [Portrait impression balance] cannot be set in the video recording menu.
  • Because base ISO sensitivity is used, ISO sensitivity may change when you switch from other video file types.
  • The camera may have trouble focusing using autofocus but this does not indicate a malfunction.

Base ISO sensitivity

You can switch the base ISO sensitivity between low sensitivity and high sensitivity.
Base ISO sensitivity can be set using [ISO sensitivity settings] in the video recording menu.

OptionDescription
[Base ISO sensitivity]Set the base ISO sensitivity according to the scene. R3D RAW video is recorded at the set base ISO sensitivity.
  • [Low sensitivity]: Set the base ISO sensitivity to ISO 800. Select this setting for bright scenes.
  • [High sensitivity]: Set the base ISO sensitivity to ISO 6400. Select this setting for dark scenes.
  • ISO sensitivity for R3D RAW video can be adjusted in the post-production process.
[ISO sensitivity]Set the brightness of the shooting display and the ISO sensitivity of MP4 video (proxy video) that is recorded simultaneously. If ISO sensitivity is to be adjusted in the post-production process, you can easily check the exposure in the camera monitor.
  • ISO sensitivity is recorded in the R3D RAW video as metadata.
  • The ISO sensitivity value that can be set varies depending on the selected [Base ISO sensitivity] setting.
    • [Low sensitivity]: ISO 200 to ISO 3200
    • [High sensitivity]: ISO 1600 to ISO 25600

Base ISO sensitivity

  • When recording R3D RAW video, set the ISO sensitivity using [Base ISO sensitivity]. The set [ISO sensitivity] value will be recorded as metadata in any RAW video footage. RAW video is recorded at either ISO 800 (low sensitivity) or ISO 6400 (high sensitivity) depending on the value selected for [Base ISO sensitivity].
  • The following video recording menu [ISO sensitivity settings] options cannot be set if [R3D NE 12-bit (R3D)] is selected for [Video file type] in the video recording menu.
    • [Maximum sensitivity]
    • [Auto ISO control (mode M)]
    • [ISO sensitivity (mode M)]

3D LUT

When the video file type is [R3D NE 12-bit (R3D)], LUTs for Log3G10 or LUTs created using video editing software can be applied to the shooting display by setting Custom Setting g15 [3D LUT].

  • w will appear in the shooting display.
  • The actual recorded footage is unaffected.
  • LUTs can also be applied when playing back MP4 video (proxy video) that was recorded simultaneously with R3D video.
OptionDescription
[3D LUT]Select [ON] to apply a LUT for Log3G10 on the shooting display.
[Select LUT]Select a LUT for Log3G10 to apply.
  • The default setting is LUT [REC. 709] for monitoring with Rec. 709.
[Import CUBE file]Import a LUT (CUBE file) to the camera from a memory card. Highlight the CUBE file you want to import and press the center of the multi selector to display destination options. Highlight a destination and press the center of the multi selector to import the CUBE file to the camera.
  • Save CUBE files to be imported to the camera in “NIKON” folder > “LUTS” folder on the memory card.
  • Up to 10 CUBE files saved on the memory cards in the primary slot and secondary slot will be displayed on the CUBE file selection dialog. If more than 10 CUBE files are saved on the memory cards, the 10 most recently updated CUBE files will be displayed.
  • [REC. 709], which is saved by default, cannot be chosen as a destination.
  • The following CUBE files can be imported:
    • Extension: CUBE
    • File name: Up to 90 characters (file names over 30 characters will appear abbreviated on the camera)
    • Card where files will be saved: exFAT formatted memory card (save to a card larger than 64 GB that has been formatted with this camera)
    • 17pt, 33pt, or 65pt 3D LUTs

Caution: Frame rate of 119.88p or 100p

[3D LUT] is disabled when [[DX] 3984×2240; 119.88p] or [[DX] 3984×2240; 100p] is selected for [Frame size/frame rate] in the video recording menu. [3D LUT] is also disabled when playing back MP4 video (proxy video) that was recorded simultaneously with R3D video shot with this frame size/frame rate. When this frame size/frame rate is set, you can use Custom Setting g14 [View assist] to easily correct the tone of the camera’s shooting display, even if the video tone mode is set to Log3G10.
